About Heathrow Airport & BAA

In 2010, I worked on the framework development for Heathrow Airport’s website as part of the wider BAA airport group. The project focused on creating a scalable digital system that could support multiple airport websites while maintaining flexibility for individual branding.

The challenge was balancing usability, performance, and consistency across high-traffic platforms used daily by millions of travellers. Every component needed to be clear, reliable, and adaptable.

The final framework provided a structured foundation for Heathrow, as well as Southampton, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stansted, and Aberdeen airports, allowing each site to maintain its own identity through tailored colour systems and branding.

Branding

A flexible design system designed to support multiple airport identities

While the framework remained consistent across the BAA network, each airport required its own visual identity. Colour palettes and branded elements were adapted individually to create distinction while maintaining overall cohesion across the group.

This approach helped create a recognisable system that could scale across multiple websites without losing the personality of each airport.

Web Design

A scalable, user-focused experience designed for clarity and accessibility

The framework was built around usability and fast access to information. Flexible layouts allowed for dynamic content placement including promotional banners, live updates, and airport-specific messaging.

Navigation and structure were designed to support high volumes of content while remaining intuitive for travellers needing quick access to arrivals, departures, weather, and airport services.

Outcome

A unified digital framework across large-scale travel platforms

This project remains one of the largest and most technically demanding projects I’ve worked on. Contributing to a framework used across several major UK airports required careful attention to usability, scalability, and consistency.

It was a valuable experience in designing for large audiences and complex systems while delivering digital experiences that needed to perform reliably at scale.
