About Level Select

Level Select was a gaming blog created for one of my closest friends as a platform to share reviews, opinions, and gaming news. What started as a simple idea quickly evolved into a full passion project focused on celebrating gaming culture through bold visuals and engaging content.

The goal was to create a site that felt unmistakably game-inspired while remaining easy to navigate and manage. Using WordPress as the foundation, I designed and built a fully custom blog experience that balanced personality with usability.

Over time, the site became an active space for sharing content and connecting with other gamers before eventually closing after a successful four-year run.

Branding

A nostalgic visual identity designed to capture retro gaming culture

The original Level Select branding leaned heavily into pixel-inspired visuals, arcade aesthetics, and bold green tones that reflected classic gaming design. The logo became a central part of the site’s personality, combining playful typography with a vibrant starburst graphic.

While revisiting the project years later, I redesigned the logo to modernise the identity while preserving its retro roots. The updated version refined the typography, simplified the overall structure, and introduced a subtle level-inspired icon to create a cleaner and more versatile mark.

Web Design

A vibrant, community-focused experience designed for gaming content

The website was built with a strong emphasis on readability and accessibility for frequent content updates. Categories, tags, and custom search functionality helped users quickly find reviews, news, and gaming discussions.

Visually, the design embraced bold typography, dark interface elements, and bright accent colours inspired by classic gaming aesthetics. The result was a site that felt energetic and recognisable while still remaining functional for long-form content.

Outcome

A memorable creative platform across branding and digital design

Level Select became more than just a blog — it evolved into a personal creative project that blended design, development, and gaming culture into one cohesive experience. Over its four-year lifespan, the site provided a dedicated space for sharing opinions, reviews, and industry discussions.

Revisiting the branding years later also offered an opportunity to reflect on how both my design approach and the gaming industry itself had evolved, while still retaining the original personality that made the project memorable.
